Real-world evidence is increasingly shaping both regulatory approval and reimbursement decisions across Europe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Real-world evidence (RWE) is the clinical evidence derived from real-world data &mdash; healthcare records, registries and other routinely collected sources. Its role has grown from contextualising single-arm trials to informing decisions on effectiveness, safety and the natural history of disease.<\/p>\n<h2>DARWIN EU<\/h2>\n<p>At the centre of the EU&#8217;s approach is <strong>DARWIN EU<\/strong>, the EMA-coordinated federated network of real-world data sources across Europe. It has grown quickly &mdash; more complex studies, more data partners per study, and the first work in demanding areas such as pregnancy and oncology. Study requests come not only from EMA committees and national authorities but increasingly from HTA bodies, signalling a convergence of regulatory and payer evidence needs.<\/p>\n<h2>RWE in the EU HTA Regulation<\/h2>\n<p>Within the Joint Clinical Assessment, the clinical evidence base is defined by PICO scoping, and RWE is most readily used where randomised data are limited &mdash; for context, comparators or rare-disease populations. Methodological acceptance is still maturing, and standards for how RWE is weighed continue to evolve.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolving reimbursement uncertainty<\/h2>\n<p>Nationally, RWE is a practical tool for resolving the uncertainty that remains after approval &mdash; confirming relative effectiveness, refining budget impact, and underpinning managed-entry and outcomes-based agreements.
